The Recipe Module is a tool that allows you to select a recipe from the KDC recipe database, view it and its nutrition totals, print it, edit a recipe if it is yours, and add a new recipe. New Recipes added, are defaulted to private, which means only you can see it.  To share your recipes, you must Edit the recipe and mark it as public, which means all participating members of the KDC family can see them in the recipe list.

Recipes

Recips are used by the Tracking Module to keep track of your daily nutrition (see Using the Tracking Module). The KDC Food List supports the recipe module; ingredients needed for the recipe must be included in the KDC Food List. Food items not found in the food list can be added from the USDA Food List. (see Using the Food List Module)

The Recipe Module displays a selected recipe from the KDC database and provides nutritional information for each recipe; it can also be printed.

When you select a recipe, your private recipes are combined with the public recipes for ease of selection; only you can view your private recipes.

Nutrition information includes: water, calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, sugar, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, serving size, and total weight of the recipe.

The nutrition information shown, is for the current serving size; you can change the serving size by typing in a new value. This feature makes it easy to see the effect of larger or smaller servings.

The recipe module enables you to Add a New Recipe; if you do, you OWN the recipe and only you can edit the recipe whether it has been marked private or public.

When you first add a recipe, it defaults to private. After you have tested the recipe and are satisfied that it works, you can Edit the recipe and mark it as public if you want to share it. It is a good idea to add “Tested and OK” to the comment box when you are ready to make it public.

The recipe module allows you to Edit any recipe you Own, whether it is private or public. You can change the quantity of an ingredient, choose a different ingredient, add another ingredient, change the directions, add directions or comments, and change the sequence of when you add an ingredient or directions.

The recipe format is different than found in most cookbooks; it requires you to add food items in the order in which they are used and include directions for each food item or comment you add. This format makes the recipe very easy to follow but a little more difficult to create.

Quantity, Unit of Measure and Food Items all have drop down menu’s to select from.

Add a New Recipe

KDC Recipes are made up of food items from the KDC Food List and/or another KDC recipe.  When you are in the Add a New Recipe Module, the ITEM drop down list includes both food items and available recipes.

Not all KDC recipes can be used in another KDC recipe.  Only recipes where all ingredients have a volume (such as a cup or tablespoon) as a Unit Of Measure (UOM) can be used.

For example, the recipe for sausage seasoning can be used as an ingredient in a recipe for homemade sausage, since all the sausage seasoning ingredients are measured in teaspoons, which is a volume.

Another example, when you use Fish, Pollock fillet as an ingredient in a recipe, the only units of measure (UOM) available from the USDA are pound, ounce or gram; you will not be given a choice of teaspoon, tablespoon or cup. This recipe will not be available as an ingredient in another recipe.

A recipe made with ingredients from the KDC Food List that use weight as a unit of measure (UOM), give correct Nutritional Values for tracking purposes, but this recipe cannot be used as an ingredient in another recipe.

When entering a new food item for a new recipe, it is best to choose a volume unit of measure (UOM), such as cup, teaspoon, or tablespoon, if at all possible.
